Panel 1
Scene
First-person, Melissa is sitting on the toilet, her eyes fixed on her PDA.
Her PDA's home screen is a pretty simple affair an icon for her browser, a couple of messaging apps and the settings icon. The wallpaper is of her and a male fox that looks a lot like her taking a selfie. They are both wearing swimwear and holding ice-cream. They are both smiling. Both wear glasses. One of the messaging apps, the icon simply a closed envelope, has a (1) next to it.

- Several changes of clothes, both military and civilian.
- A sheathed combat dagger.
- An FN Five-seveN (unloaded).
- A few magazines for said handgun.

Panel 2
Scene
First-person, Melissa is gazing upon the above, her HUD locks onto the glasses case.
Panel 3
Scene
Melissa reaches down and picks the case up.
Panel 4
Scene
First-person, Melissa looks at the glasses in the case, a simple design (check refs). Her HUD reads out the optics on them, moderately powerful, but whoever was wearing them certainly wasn't totally blind.
Page 6

Melissa turns and walks back out of her bedroom, through her living room, into her bathroom and up to the mirror.
Panel 3 (split into 2 vertical segments)
First-person, Melissa again looks into the bathroom mirror, her currently active HUD quickly identifies her own reflection as a reflection. She puts the glasses on.
Panel 4
First-person, Melissa looks at her reflection, her augmented vision being totally unaffected by the lenses. She smiles once again.

Panel 3
Scene
Melissa turns and faces the door, the doors close.
Dialogue
Spey: "Did you just move in?"
Melissa: "I've been away..."
Panel 4
Scene
Spey looks up at Melissa and tilts their head slightly.
Melissa looks a little... frustrated.
Dialogue
Spey: "Huh, I've lived here for nearly 4 years. I'm sure I'd have seen you around."
Melissa: "I've been away 5..."
Page 11
Panel 1
Scene
Spey seems to realise that they're touching a nerve and looks away.
Melissa seems to sigh inwardly.
Panel 2

Melissa glances over at them.
Dialogue
Spey: "Y'know... I hate the muzak they play in this thing..."
Melissa: "It is rather irritating..."
Panel 3
Scene
Melissa looks up at the ceiling and appears to be studying it intently.
Spey, ears still down looks back ahead at the door.
Dialogue
Spey: "I've asked the building management to do something about it, but they never do."
Melissa: "Sounds about right."
Panel 4
Scene
Melissa appears to reach up into the ceiling with her left arm, the "camera" not quite showing where she's reaching.
Dialogue
Spey: "What are you-"
Page 12
Panel 1
Scene
Melissa appears to jerk her arm back and there's an electrical crackle.
Dialogue
Spey: "-doing..."
Panel 2
Scene
Melissa hands the object in her hand to Spey who is looking a bit scared, it's a small loudspeaker.
Dialogue
Melissa: "There we go... no more muzak."
Panel 3
Scene
Spey takes the speaker off Melissa and stares at it. Melissa returns to looking forward at the slowly decreasing number on the panel in front of her.
Dialogue
Spey: "Yeah... no more muzak."
Melissa: "It was irritating."
Panel 4
Scene
Spey drops the loudspeaker on the ground and nervously chuckles, glancing over at Melissa who continues to look forward.
Page 13
Multipanel
Scene
The mechanism to allow the lift to ding doesn't seem affected. It chimes once and the doors slide open.
Melissa steps out into the hallway, Spey follows with their washing basket a moderate distance behind.
Page 14
The apartment's built in laundromat. A long and wide room lined with stacked front-loading industrial dryers, several rows of toploading industrial washers fill the space between them.
Long wooden benches sit between the rows of washers and dryers.
Signs on the wall remind people not to overload machines, correct washing procedures, costs of use along with standard warnings and disclaimers.
Panel 1
Scene
Melissa approaches one of the machines in the middle of the room unslinging her bag from her shoulder.
Panel 2
Scene
Melissa drops her bag on a bench and unzips it revealing her bunched up clothes inside it.
Spey can be seen behind her loading one of the washing machines from their basket.
Panel 3
Scene
Melissa taps a fob on her keyring against the front of the washing machine causing it to light up.
"Welcome 11/A! Balance: 1,381Cr" is displayed on the screen.
Panel 4
Scene
Melissa lifts her bag onto the machine next to hers and starts to load it up.
Page 15
Panel 1 (2 segment vertical split)
Scene
Across the room Spey catches her eye again and quickly looks away.
Panel 2
Scene
First-person, Melissa is looking over at Spey, who seems to be doing their best to avoid eye contact.
Totally organic, not even a neural interface or any medical implants.
Panel 3
Scene
Melissa straightens up and looks across the divide at Spey. Spey looks back over nervously.
Dialogue
Melissa: "Hey, I uh... I'm sorry about the lift."
Spey: "Huh? What?"
Panel 4
Scene
Melissa appears to visibly sigh, but smiles softly. Spey looks a little less uneasy.
Dialogue
Melissa: "I was very abrupt with you, that was uncalled for, and I'm sorry."
Spey: "I... it's ok... really."
Page 16 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa leans against the washer and continues loading it.
Spey does so as well.
They occasionally exchange glances.
Dialogue
Melissa: "I've just felt like all I've done since I got back has been talk to people and answer questions."
Melissa: "You were just being curious and friendly, that's not your fault, it's natural."
Spey: "No, no, I was being nosey. I do that a lot."
Melissa: "You were curious about a new face, honestly don't worry about it."
Melissa: "That and... well... ripping that speaker out of the lift must have seemed really intimidating."
Spey: "It kinda did... yeah..."
Melissa: "That was not intended at all. I promise."
Page 17 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa stands back and taps a few choice commands into the washer causing it to start up. "95C, MEDICAL WASH"
She picks her bag up from the machine next to it and chucks it onto the bench behind her. She then leans against the machine next to hers.
Spey is still loading their machine.
Dialogue
Melissa: "I've been away for around 5 years, you get one guess as to where."
Spey: "Right, that farce."
Melissa: "Farce indeed. Anyway, I got back last night and it's been non-stop since..."
Spey: "Trying to get your life back on track?"
Melissa: "You could say that."
Page 18 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Spey finishes loading their machine and starts it before walking around the machines and towards the bench Melissa is sitting on. They sit on the bench next to her.
Dialogue
Spey: "Have you sat down and actually spoken to anyone about it?"
Melissa: "Kind of... Uhh... what's his name... Max in 11/E"
Spey: "Ah yeah, I know him. Has the creepy ability to know more about you than you do before he even meets you!"
Melissa chuckling: "I think he sleeps on a bed of dossiers rather than a mattress."
Spey smiling: "Would not surprise me in the slightest."
Page 19 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
As P18
Dialogue
Melissa: "Well, we spoke about where I'd been, shitty government policy, The Technosexual..."
Spey pulling a face: "How'd that place come up?"
Melissa with an inquisitive look: "I visited it to try and pay my bills because my Net access had been cut off."
Spey relaxing a little: "Sorry, reflexive, strip clubs have always weirded me out a bit."
Melissa: "To be honest, Max had a similar reaction. More judgy though."
Spey embarrassed: "Sorry, that wasn't intended."
Page 20 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
As P19
Dialogue
Melissa chuckling: "Two faux-pas in our first half hour of knowing each other. New record for me."
Spey: "I make that one-each."
Melissa: "Likewise!"
Melissa leaning back on her arms, looking at the ceiling: "When did the anti-cyborg sentiment get so bad?"
Spey looking at Melissa, tilting their head: "Huh?"
Melissa: "I've been walking everywhere and I keep seeing 'No Cyborg' signs in places."
Spey looking at the ground and sighing: "Ah yes... that..."
Page 21 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
As P19
Dialogue
Spey after a pensive pause: "It occurs to me that we've not even introduced ourselves..."
Melissa looking directly over at Spey: "Huh, I think you're right. Melissa, by the way."
Spey smiling softly back at Melissa: "Spey. I live up on the 19th."
Melissa: "The view from mine is pretty good, yours must be even better."
Spey: "Oh it is, on a good day you can see all the way to the docks!"
Melissa: "I'm just glad that my window doesn't have a big advertising board in front of it like some of them do!"
Spey their smile fades: "Yeah... so... the anti-cyborg stuff..."
Page 22+ (Split to panels and additional pages as desired, distribute scene ideas as desired)
Scene(s)
- Various newspaper headlines talking about malfunctions, or rogue cyborgs.
- Businesses with "No Cyborgs!" signs getting put up
- A clearly augmented individual being escorted from an office, cardboard box in hands.
- A TV "Debate" with a "facebook mom" styled individual at one podium appearing to just scream whilst the professional looking cyberneticist at the other podium visibly groans.
- Propoganda fliers from the "Society for Biological Purity".
- A TV news report about rogue cyborgs in the Western Republic War.
- Protests outside cybernetic research labs and repair facilities.
- A net article talking about how "Terrible" the "Augmentalist" movement is, conflating it with a much more extreme "Transfigurationist" movement.
- Misinformed, clickbait or generally hateful posts about augments on social media/The Net.
- An anti-cyborg post on some kind of social media, the user has a checkmark inside a coloured many-pointed star next to their name.
- A group of masked figures, apparantly part of the SoBP (or one of it's more extreme wings) appear to be violently dismembering an augment. The images appear to be taken from a shaky, low resolution device.
- A group of masked figures, apparantly part of either the Augmentalists or Transfigurationists sitting around some kind of chemical fire, strange shapes dance in the light and shadow.
- Members of the Transfigurationist cult forcibly augmenting someone, it appears they're performing some kind of neural surgery. It does not look like an enjoyable process for the organic. The image quality massively reduced by digital distortion and poor recording equipment.
- A news report talking about the deaths of two prominent menbers of the SBP, apparantly at the hands of heavily augmented cyborgs.
- Images from inside some kind of debating chamber, a grumpy looking older man with wild hair in an ill fitting suit and blue tie appears to be rambling on. "EUBC Parliament" displayed in a bottom corner along with a news ticker. The headline "Augment Expense Reclaimation Tax Debate" subheadline "Prime Minister Alex de Piffle pleads with ministers to support new bill"
Dialogue (Split as desired/required)
Spey [Narrating]: "There's always been opposition to cybernetic augmentation. Political movements, religious movements, the ignorant, the misinformed, the bigoted... and, simply, the concerned."
"Augmentation is a scary concept, I won't lie, it terrifies me. I don't even have a neural interface."
"Of course, this can lead to... feelings of inadequacy as people around you "upgrade" and start to overtake you at things you used to be better at. They get faster, stronger, seemingly smarter and you get left behind."
"It would be incredibly easy to get roped in to a lot of the terrible things that certain, particularly loud and popular, individuals spout about it on The Net."
"Why think for yourself when you can have a celebrity think for you, as they upload a near direct conciousness stream to Timeline or FriendBase. "Hey that put my fears into words! I must agree with this person!", and the messages get reposted, and shared, and corrupted... and slowly grow more extreme."
"Of course, extremism begets extremism in a lot of cases. It's how we've always been as a society. So the more extreme elements of "the victims" start to get louder in response to the attacks..."
"You know "the Augmentalists" right? Your average person has no idea who they are and just listens to the media, or the loud people on The Net. Do just a little research and you understand that they are a group of people that believe that the next stage in our evolution is to integrate with machines. But, they aren't against people that want to remain organic, they leave them alone. Generally they only get annoyed and speak up when people get in the way of progress into cybernetic and AI research."
"The current prevaling strategy by anti-augments is to directly conflate them with "Transfigurationists". On the surface, a group with seemingly the exact same goals. They're just a lot more violent about it, and a lot more... what's the word... fanatic about it. If you're un-augmented, you are scum to them and "Holding back society out of fear and ignorance." As a result of this, the Transfigurationists have got bolder, they've got louder, and they're playing right into the fears of the general public."
"My theory is that they're actually a shadow branch of the SoBP designed to paint cybernetic augments as a group of crazed zealots that are going to force everyone to get implants. Well... it's a prevaling theory, but there is absolutely no solid evidence of it. I'm sure that the members of The Transfigurationist Movement have no idea, or just don't want to believe it... if it is true, of course."
"So, that leaves you, and your kind. Military cyborgs. A very easy target for the media indeed. You are made to be better than pure organics in nearly every way. You are exactly what us "pure organics" are "supposed to fear"."
"A couple of malfunctions here, a few high profile incidents there, and bam suddenly all cyborgs are dangerous instruments of war that could snap at any second and kill us all."
"One side pushes, the other side pushes back, the first side points at the second and goes "See, we were totally justified in pushing!" then they push harder, the cycle repeats. It takes a critical mind to read between the lines and filter out all the crap getting spread about."
"Your average person isn't interested in filtering the crap, they just blindly share things that match their world view. Slowly but surely, more people form more extreme views and the whole mess gets even bigger..."
"You said you'd been away 5 years? Yeah, a lot has changed in those 5 years. Has public opinion genuinely shifted, or have terrible people just got louder? Part of me hopes the latter."
"The government certainly isn't helping, reactionaries that they are. The loudest voices are currently anti-cyborg, gotta appease those voices or risk losing the next election!"
"Bollocks, of course, at least if it's just the noise level rather than the actual volume of people. Unfortunately, the government draws attention to these things with legislation and further swey general public opinion."
Page ~23 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Spey visibly sighing and staring up at the ceiling once again, their eyes not really wandering much from a single spot, their ears are folded backwards like they heard an unpleasant noise.
Melissa is staring dead ahead at her washing machine, the display showing the time remaining on the current cycle. Her eyes dart about as she tries to process everything she's been told.
Dialogue
Spey: "It's extremely tiring to keep up with. There could be many more distinct political and social movements, or laws being passed, or even global discourse that I am not aware of. As much as I hate saying it, I just don't have the energy to pay attention to it anymore, as much as I find the whole 'Anti-Cyborg' thing hellishly distasteful."
Melissa: "I certainly got stung hard by the government. You get home after fighting an ill-advised war for them and find yourself stripped of all your salary because of some new tax or something..."
Spey: "Yeah... de Piffle has been really proud of that one. Won't shut up about it..."
Melissa looking over at Spey: "He got re-elected... How!?"
Spey: "Beats me, his reputation and public image are in the toilet, but somehow he keeps getting elected."
Melissa: "I don't think I want to know."
Page ~24 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Spey stands and walks back over to their machine to check it's progress.
Melissa remains seated and pulls out her PDA to look at the news.
The EUBC News app is a pretty simple affair with a blue banner, the logo is just the letters "EUBC" blue in a white box, underneath the banner is a series of categories, "Local", "EU", "World", etc.
The content is left aligned images with bold headlines and short summaries next to them.
The leading article is about the murder of two prominent anti-cyborg activists.
Dialogue
Melissa wrinkling her nose: "Lead article on the EUBC is about the death of two anti-cyborg activists it seems."
Spey: "Yeah, even I can't avoid that one, it's been headline news for about a week."
Melissa: "Know much about it?"
Spey: "Only what I've been forced to see whilst channel hopping or looking at Timeline. Two very loud, and pretty disgusting anti-cyborg activists got literally torn limb from limb in their own home late at night about a week ago."
Melissa: "And they suspect a cyborg was involved?"
Spey: "Heavily implied, certainly, and barring a false-flag deal it probably was. Their arms and legs were literally torn clean off. No signs of cutting, but plenty of crush damage. Takes a lot of power to do that."
Melissa: "So they got martyred."
Spey: "Pretty much, yeah."
Melissa scrolling through the app: "So everything escalates further. A cybernetics repair business was firebombed last night. A group calling themselves 'The Hand of Purity' have taken credit."
Spey making air quotes: "Those crackpots. Yeah, they're the militant arm of 'The Society for Biological Purity'. I have no idea how the SBP haven't been shut down over it, it's so obvious they're linked."
Page ~25 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa puts her PDA away and stands, walking over to her own machine, not for much reason beyond just not looking at her PDA anymore.
Spey approaches one of the notices on the wall and appears to be intently studying it.
Dialogue
Melissa: "Sorry, you try and avoid these things, I shouldn't be loudly talking about them to you."
Spey: "This kind of thing directly impacts you, it would be remiss of me not to answer whatever questions I can."
Melissa: "I probably shouldn't go on about it though, doesn't do either of our mental health any good!"
Spey chuckling inwardly: "Yeah, I suppose you're right."
Page ~26 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Spey turns and walks back to their machine just in time for it to chime signalling it's completion. They lean over and pick up their wash basket and place it on the machine next to theirs.
Melissa continues to stand by her machine and looks over at Spey.
Dialogue
Spey: "So, now you've left the military, you got a normal job to go back to or..."
Melissa: "The company I worked for had a big merger a year or so after I left apparantly and moved all their operations out to the North Western Dominion. Something to do with 'increasing anti-cyborg sentiment' here."
Spey: "Sounds about right, a lot of high-tech has left the EU over all this, that and de Piffle's handling of the economy has been... lacklustre at best."
Melissa: "Where do you work? If you don't mind me asking."
Spey: "I'm the senior networking engineer for Codified Systems. We're a pretty global business, offices all over the place and a lot of remote workers."
Melissa nervous laughter: "You wouldn't happen to have any open spots?"
Spey: "Sadly not, the global economy has taken a beating, so we're struggling a bit too. Lots of cut hours... I'm just thankful there's been no layoffs."
Page ~27 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa's machine chimes "FINISH" along with a checkered flag graphic appears on the display. She grabs her bag and sits it on the machine next to hers.
Spey is already unloading their machine into their basket.
Dialogue
Spey: "I'll let you know though... do you have any plans otherwise?"
Melissa: "I do have a pending job offer..."
Spey ears perk up: "Oh? That's good! Whereabouts?"
Melissa: "The Technosexual."
Spey quirking an eyebrow, one ear flicks back: "Doing what, dare I ask?"
Melissa: "That's the thing, they didn't really say. I'm going back tonight to talk to the owner."
Spey pulling the last item of clothing out their machine: "I guess a job's a job in this economy."
Melissa fishing around in the bottom of her machine: "It seems like a nice enough place at least, strip club or not."
Page ~28 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa and Spey finish unloading their machines and start to walk towards the driers. Instead of picking machines opposite each other Spey walks round and picks the machine next to Melissa.
It's a similar process to loading the washing machines except they both have their basket/bag on the bench behind them instead of on the machine next to theirs. (because the machines are along the wall instead of toploading)
Dialogue
Melissa: "Can I ask you something?"
Spey: "What's up?"
Melissa: "You said that augmentation scares you, why is that?"
Spey: pause "I'm scared of losing myself."
Melissa: "Can you... elaborate on that?"
Page ~29 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
They finish loading up their machines and sit down next to each other, Spey looks at the floor and Melissa looks over at them. Spey occasionally shuffles or looks up at their machine. They never look at Melissa.
Dialogue
Spey: "It's really hard to explain, and might not make a lot of sense... but I'll try."
Spey: "It's because I like who I am, I like how I experience the world, having my own thoughts and feelings."
Spey: "The concept of changing that through some kind of neural implant just... I don't know... it makes me really uncomfortable."
Spey: "I also feel like elective augmentation to get an advantage... it doesn't feel 'fair', if you get me..."
Page ~30 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Spey is looking over at Melissa now, she appears to be scrutinising the rambling fennec, no particular emotion is readable on her face.
Dialogue
Spey: "Then there's the people that get hooked on augmentations, who's to say that couldn't be me."
Spey: "I don't want to take that chance, as rare as it may be."
Spey: "Along with all the health complications that can arise..."
Spey: "I'm rambling a lot here... I'm sorry..."
Page ~31 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Melissa smiles a disarming smile, she can kind of see where they're coming from. Spey has gone back to looking at the floor, they occasionally glance up at her.
Dialogue
Melissa: "I get where you're coming from, I do."
Spey: "I sometimes worry that I sound like one of those SBP crackpots."
Melissa: "Those are genuine and legitimate concerns for you, I'm not going to hold that against you."
Melissa: "Just like you don't hold it against those that are augmented."
Spey: "As long as nobody's getting hurt..."
Melissa: "As long as nobody's getting hurt!"
Page ~32 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
Pictured from behind, Melissa and Spey stand waiting for the elevator to arrive, an array of LEDs above the doorway count down to the elevator arriving.
Their tails sway a bit, but they do not otherwise converse or emote. They seem to be lost in their own thoughts.
Page ~33 (Split to panels as desired)
Scene
The elevator arrives and they both step inside and turn around, Melissa reaches over and pushes the appropriate buttons, the doors close between them and the camera.
Proposed
[
Just before it does though Melissa's expression cracks.
Dialogue
Melissa: "SHIT! I left my coffee pot on..."
Spey: laughing
